GROWING UP WITH THE GREATS
by Tom Lineaweaver One of the reasons young people today don't know what great Country music is, is that they were probably not exposed to it, as I was growing up.
I was born in 1956. What was happening in the music field? Elvis Presley was just starting out. He had his rock-a-billy years with folks like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis and others. Of course, Elvis became a Rock icon, and the rest excelled in Country music, especially Johnny Cash.
The local station, WLBR, had a lot of Country programming. Ken Lightner was on in the morning, he played Country. He had is own band, and he sang Country. In fact. he actually sang on the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree, as did other local Country artists like Al Shade, who also had a show on WLBR, and Frankie Dee, who had a show on WAHT, later WVLV where I got started in the radio business. WLBR had another guy named Buck Benson, who played more Bluegrass.
In those days, I heard a lot of older music. They played Moon Mullican, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, George Morgan, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Slim Whitman. and others.
Moon Mullican did a song caled "Jole Blon," which means, as I have learned, "the blond."

This was my first favorite song and artist. Hawkshaw died in a plane crash. But who knows what he could have accomplished had he not been taken so early in life.

Then there was Cowboy Copas. This is the song I remember most by him...
Of course there was Hank Williams...
These guys paved the way for Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Buck Owens.
In the mid 60s, it seems Country music started to change. The Country Music industry wanted to get the city folks to accept Country. It was then instruments became electrified. It became known as Metro Country. One guy really benefitted from this change. Conway Twitty. When he first became Country, he sounded more traditional. Just listen to Hello Darlin'...
Sure there was a steel guitar, but it was an accompaniment. I don't know who did it, but it was a stroke od genius when someone decided to make the steel guitar a dominant feature. Hear the difference in Last Date...
Conway Twitty stepped into Metro Country in a big way, and became the most popular Country artist ever at the time.
I know the greats of Country music, because I grew up with them.
Today, the "greats of Country music" like Keith Urban, are nothing of the sort. But this is what recent generations have grown up with, and have been brainwashed to think that the stuff being called Country music is in fact Country music, when it's not.
I guess it's important what you grow up with, musically, that shapes your tastes in music. But, I really did grow up with the greats of Country music. And what young people are growing up with today, can't compare to the greatness of the Country greats I grew with.
This is not because I'm older. I have also studied music. I probably forgot a lot. But I do know what Country music is because of the greats I grew up with, and my education.TIME TO BE... |
