CONWAY TWITTY AND METRO COUNTRY by Tom Lineaweaver In the mid 60s, it seems Country music started to change. The Country Music industry wanted to get the city folks to accept Country. It was then instruments became electrified. It became known as Metro Country. One guy really benefited from this change. Conway Twitty. When he first became Country, he sounded more traditional. Just listen to Hello Darlin'...Sure there was a steel guitar, but it was an accompaniment. I don't know who did it, but it was a stroke of genius when someone decided to make the steel guitar a dominant feature. Hear the difference in Last Date...Conway Twitty stepped into Metro Country in a big way, and became the most popular Country artist ever at the time.
Of course, my favorite Conway song has the presence of the steel guitar...
